Saving begins early on...
Stepping Stones Savings Account
You love your children or grandchildren so much. You wonder, what kind of economy will they face when theyre on their own? Will they be able to weather the storms? And will they know how to save and manage money wisely?
There are no guarantees, but theres a lot we can do to help them develop good financial habits that will last them a lifetime.
Thats why BCU offers Stepping Stones Savings Accounts. With three age-specific programs, children through teens can learn the basics about managing money with a real savings account that earns dividends so they can get excited about watching their money grow.
To further encourage good savings habits, we offer a punch card program. After saving $10.00, your child can start filling up a punch card to enter our quarterly drawing and could win exciting prizes, such as a retail store gift certificate.
Like you, we at BCU know how important it is give children a good financial start. And with our Stepping Stones program, well be with you every step of the way.
Our Stepping Stones programs include:
Baby Steps, ages 4 and younger
Identifying coins, counting money and saving, these are lessons our youngest savers learn after opening that first savings account. Theyll receive a piggy bank and an educational brochure to get them started.
Junior Steps, ages 5-12
Saving for future goals, budgeting their allowances, and making wise purchasing choices are all important lessons for young savers to learn. With Junior Steps, we help them stay on track.
Stepping Out, ages 13-17
Soon theyll be out on their own. Will they be ready? At this crucial time in life, its important that teens learn smart shopping techniques, set long-term savings goals, and learn to avoid getting into debt. We can help teach them these basics, and will also give them ideas on how to earn their own money. Once the member reaches age 18, theyll graduate from the Stepping Stones Savings Account and move on to a regular savings account.
Financial Education for Children
Stepping Stones Savings Club members also receive FREE educational materials and access to Googoplex, an online resource that makes learning about money fun. The site includes great puzzles, games, quizzes and stories that are geared toward specific age groups. Click on the link on the right hand side of the page to access the site. Googolplex is divided into three levels:
- Five-Spot Clubhouse introduces elementary students to basic money concepts, including saving and spending.
- AJs Mega-Mall helps middle-schoolers learn about saving, shopping and smart money management. It also helps kids learn social skills, such as making friends.
- The C-Note University section talks up, not down, to high school students about cars, college, shopping, and even getting rich.
