Vernon Hills, IL – July 26, 2004 – Baxter Credit Union (BCU) was honored with the Michael E. Godwin Award for Community Service at the Youth & Family Counseling Annual Golf Outing. As one of Youth & Family Counseling’s most generous sponsors, BCU has helped the agency raise over $50,000 annually since the first year of the golf outing.

Youth & Family Counseling is a private not-for-profit social service agency offering counseling, education, and support services for the prevention and treatment of mental illness to people who live and/or work in Lake County, regardless of their ability to pay. Essentially, ninety-five percent of clients take advantage of the sliding fee scale that allows them to pay only what they can afford – most could not afford treatment otherwise.

The majority of Youth & Family Counseling clients are seen at agency offices in Libertyville. However, treatment is also offered in Spanish at offices in Round Lake Park, Mundelein, and Waukegan.

In addition to the Counseling Program, Youth & Family Counseling sponsors two additional outreach programs, Family Circle and Aprendiendo Jugando, which target specific needs in the community.

Youth & Family Counseling holds an annual golf outing to raise support for the agency. Last year, the Michael E. Godwin Award for Community Service was created to recognize an individual or business whose contributions aided in the advancement of the Youth & Family Counseling mission and helped to build a stronger, healthier Lake County. The award is named in the honor of Mike Godwin, an executive and active board member, who promoted and practiced philanthropy in his professional and personal life until his passing. Having demonstrated the dedication, leadership, and philanthropy that Mike so eagerly and continuously demonstrated, BCU was granted this award.

BCU was presented the Michael E. Godwin Award during dinner at the annual golf outing on June 21, 2004. Michael G. Valentine, BCU’s President and CEO, received the award on behalf of the organization. “When the Committee decided to recognize a business this year, the choice to present the award to BCU was unanimous,” said Janelle Moravek, Development Director, Youth & Family Counseling.

“We are honored to be part of this unique association and are happy to be able to assist in the growth and continuation of the valuable services they provide to our community. We look forward to continuing our support to this remarkable organization,” said Michael G. Valentine.

With over $950 million in Assets, BCU currently serves more than 110,000 members throughout the United States and Puerto Rico. Formed in 1981, BCU is a not-for-profit, member-owned credit union offering a full range of financial products and services, in English and Spanish. Known for competitive rates, low fees, and state-of-the-art services, BCU is headquartered in Vernon Hills, Illinois. Membership is open to anyone who lives or works in Lake, McHenry, DuPage, and Kane Counties in Illinois, as well as Kenosha County in Wisconsin.
