Emergency Relief for Haiti News Update: No Interchange Fee for Charitable Donations

The Credit Union, along with the worldwide community, is committed to support relief efforts aiding Haiti in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake which hit this Caribbean country. The outpouring of support and much-needed donations towards relief efforts has been tremendous.

In recent days there have been many news reports discussing credit card transaction fees being charged on charitable donations, hampering some fundraising efforts. The Credit Union wants to inform its members that Visa® and MasterCard® have both gone on the record to state they will not charge transaction fees for charitable donations made towards Haitian relief efforts. All Credit Union ATM/Debit, Credit and Prepaid Cards are issued through Visa or MasterCard.

More specifically, Visa has stated it will not apply interchange fees, through February, to donations made to a select group of major charities—the names of which are still being compiled—that are providing support to Haitian relief efforts.

MasterCard Worldwide said it will wave interchange fees on relief donations made using United States-issued MasterCard cards to the American Red Cross, AmeriCares, Unicef, Save the Children and CARE U.S.A.

The Credit Union is committed to keeping our members informed and will continue to post updates as new information becomes available.
