What to look for – and how to avoid becoming a victim

If you have an email address, bank online or even surf the web, you’ve probably thought about online scammers. Yes, this type of crime still happens today. But, the good news is that by staying aware and taking precautions, you can stay safe. Really, it’s not much different than what you do when visiting an unfamiliar place or even when keeping your eyes open when walking around your neighborhood.

How scammers work

The most common type of online fraud is phishing (pronounced “fishing”). When phishing, criminals send phony email messages with one goal, to steal personal and financial information. These emails usually appear to come from a reputable company, such as a bank or airline, and ask you to click on a link. Or, an email might have an attached file.

Frequently, these emails contain poor grammar or misspelled words or have a logo or branded elements that are just slightly wrong. If you receive an email that appears to be suspicious, do not reply to it or click on any links it contains. And, never open up an attachments if you aren’t certain about who sent them. Simply delete the email.

If you get a suspicious email appearing to BCU, don’t reply to it. Instead call Member Relations at 800-388-7000 to verify the email’s origins.
