Courtesy Payment¹

We offer Courtesy Payment – to help you avoid having a transaction declined when you use your Debit Card at a point of sale or ATM because your account is overdrawn. Also, Courtesy Payment helps prevent being charged Non Sufficient Funds (NSF) fees and charges for returned checks.

What is Courtesy Payment and how does it work?

Courtesy Payment may be granted that will allow you to overdraw your account up to your Courtesy Payment limit. We pay overdrafts at our discretion, which means we do not guarantee that we will always authorize and pay any type of transaction. Our Courtesy Payment service will attempt to pay, when possible, checks, ACHs, and recurring Debit Card purchases presented against insufficient funds in your account. Courtesy Payment will allow you to overdraw your account from up to $200, and in certain cases, up to an absolute maximum of $1,500 including any service charges. The limit may change from time to time based on your individual BCU account transaction history. If you believe an overdraft situation is likely, you should ask us for your specific limit.

How can Courtesy Payment be applied to my account?

Check Writing -
This is the most common use of Courtesy Payment, and you don’t have to do anything to take advantage of this service.

Quick Tip: Checks are cleared in the order presented, and in check # order if more than one check is presented on the same day any check presented after your balance is exceeded will be subject to $29 Courtesy Payment service change.

Checks that you deposit by mail, ATM or in-person may not immediately increase your balance. Commonly, two-to-five business day hold periods apply depending on whether the check is local or not. Please keep this in mind when writing checks so that you do not unintentionally incur the $29 Courtesy Payment service charge.

Quick Tip: Do a "Balance Inquiry" before you withdrawal to ensure you have sufficient funds.

ATM Access -
Your Courtesy Payment limit will not show on your account balance when you perform an inquiry. However, you will be able to withdraw up to your Courtesy Payment limit at the ATM as long as you have provided your consent. For example, if your account has a $0 balance and you have a $500 Courtesy Payment limit, you can withdraw up to the $500. Use caution when using the ATM not to overdraw your account.

Online purchases -
If you shop at online retailers, Courtesy Payment will honor any overdrafts made with your Debit Card as long as you have provided your consent

Quick Tip: Go to Online Banking and check your“Available Balance” to cover purchases.

If you do not have sufficient funds to cover your online purchases, the standard overdraft process and service charge assessment will apply.

Electronic payments -
Even if a payment is made through Online Banking or another electronic transfer, Courtesy Payment can honor any authorized payment up to your set limit including service charges.

Quick Tip: Use Direct Deposit to make sure your deposits are made before any scheduled payments go out. Direct Deposit funds are available immediately. If you use your Courtesy Payment, each item will appear on your monthly statement. Checks are cleared in the order presented, and in check # order if more than one check is presented on same day, not by the amount, so there may be multiple charges on a single statement. It is helpful to check balances through Online Banking or an ATM before writing several checks.“Available Balance” to cover purchases.

Example:
Account with $50 Balance and $500 Courtesy Payment Limit
 Beginning Balance:$50.00
 Day 1:
 Check Amount:($292.00)
 Courtesy Payment Service Charge Charged:($29.00)
 Account Balance:-$271.00
 Day 2:
 ATM Withdrawal:($200.00)
 Courtesy Payment Service Charge Charged:($29.00)
 Account Balance:-$500.00
Day 3: No More Available Balance

Opt Out Option. You can choose to opt out of the program at any time by calling Member Relations. Should you require the Courtesy Payment service at a later time, you can request to have it added back to your account.

Help Manage Your Account:
Here are a few helpful tips to avoid exceeding your account balance, while reserving Courtesy Payment for when you really need it.

  • Know your balance - use Online Banking, Telephone Teller and your check book to track the checks you have written and that have cleared, and to make sure you have available funds to cover any new purchases or payments. Every check covered beyond your balance will be subject to the $29 Courtesy Payment service charge.
  • Confirm check holds - we work to make your funds available as quickly as possible after a deposit, but there are often cases where check holds apply. Electronic deposits are available on the same day we receive the deposit.
  • Avoid overdrawing at an ATM - do a “Balance Inquiry” before making an ATM withdrawal. Courtesy Payment funds are available for any ATM transaction, but do not appear as an available balance.
  • Don’t delay deposits - there is a $15 Overdrawn Account fee after 10 days, and if a deposit is not made, your account is subject to additional actions. If no deposit is made in 20 days, the Courtesy Payment service will be temporarily suspended.
  • Track your transactions - when you access your Courtesy Payment service through an overdrawn check, electronic transactions including ATM, ACH, and debit transactions, there is a $29 Courtesy Payment service charge assessed per transaction.
  • We’ve also provided answers to frequently asked questions to help guide you through this service.
