BCU Announces Successful "Jeans in June" Fundraiser to Create a Classroom Library for Local North Chicago School

July 10, 2013

Baxter Credit Union (BCU) successfully raised $2,245 as part of its 2013 “Jeans in June” fundraiser to create a classroom library for a selected school from one of the communities that BCU serves.

The popular “Jeans in June” Fundraiser permits BCU employees to wear jeans throughout the entire month of June in exchange for a $20 donation to be used to purchase books for a classroom library. This year, BCU is partnering with Power Reading for the donation of the books and has selected a school in North Chicago as the recipient of the giving campaign. The books will be collected after BCU completes the remainder of its 2013 fundraising efforts with Companies That Care, an organization dedicated to community well-being and social sustainability. BCU plans to extend amounts reached in 2012, which resulted in the distribution of 1,100 books to Nelson-Wilks-Herron Elementary school in Mountain Home, Arkansas.

Named to the Companies That Care Honor Roll for nine consecutive years, BCU is recognized for its ongoing support to charitable organizations such as The American Cancer Society, The March of Dimes, Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF), Riverside Foundation, Zacharias Sexual Abuse Center, Youth and Family Counseling, and many others. BCU donates more than $250,000 to various nonprofit organizations annually, with an additional $10,000 in charitable giving raised by BCU employees who embrace a culture of giving back.

“When we see the importance and impact of employee volunteer efforts, as well as our financial support, it is hard not to want to continue to do as much as we can to keep making a difference,” says Tom Moore, Executive Vice President/CFO. “Giving back is part of the foundation of our organization.”

BCU actively promotes the idea that a credit union is far more than just a place to transact financial business, but rather an institution that can help to bring a community together by means of a “people helping people” philosophy. The BCU Charitable Giving Committee plans to expand its giving throughout the remainder of the year and further encourage employees to engage in vital community outreach efforts.
