BCU Employee Volunteers Give Back

December 7, 2018

158 boxes containing 34,128 meals will feed 93 children for a year – thanks to the efforts of BCU employee volunteers who participated in food packing for Feed My Starving Children, a global organization helping to feed malnourished children in over 60 developing countries.

The team assembled on Giving Tuesday, joining the millions around the world that came together to celebrate generosity on the internationally recognized day.

What began as a small team of volunteers quickly grew to more than 30 BCU employees. Everyone had one simple goal in mind: To make a meaningful difference for those in need.

At the Feed My Starving Children warehouse in Libertyville, Illinois, employee volunteers watched footage of children in Haiti, Swaziland, and the Philippines who need our help.

The BCU team then took to the floors ready to scoop rice, seal bags, and load boxes, later learning their efforts would feed 93 children for a year.

“We must not forget how blessed we are with the things we have in our lives,” said BCU Loan Sales Manager and volunteer team leader Guillermo Casillas. “I really value how fortunate we are to be able to pay this forward and help those in need.”

Volunteering is just one of the many ways the Credit Union gives back to communities near and far, additionally donating 1% of its annual income to charitable organizations.

“Extraordinary impact requires extraordinary people,” said Lisa Baron, BCU Senior VP of Human Resources/Talent Management. “Together, the BCU family have created an incredible long-standing culture of caring that serves as the very foundation for fulfilling the Credit Union’s purpose.”

“This time of year is often noted as the ‘season of giving’, but every day can and should be a giving day,” said Casillas. “I’m proud to be part of an organization that makes giving back part of every season.”

Last year, BCU employees logged more than 3,000 volunteer hours; a total they are on track to exceed in 2018.
