Unlock Financial Success: ADHD-Friendly Digital Solutions

This post is the second of a two-part series. Part one, Avoiding Distraction: Money Management Tips for ADHDers, covered the basics of navigating financial well-being as a person with Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It’s a great starting point for anyone looking to maximize their money potential.

Once you’ve built a foundation of knowledge, understand your financial situation, and set goals, the next step is utilizing the tools at your disposal to make it as easy as possible to stick to those goals. For adults with ADHD, technology can be a game-changer. From automating payments to setting reminders, the right tools can help you stay organized and stress-free.

Here are some practical ways to digitally simplify your financial life.

Automate
Set up auto pay or schedule transfers with your financial institution to avoid missed payments or late fees. This “set it and forget it” approach works well for recurring bills that are the same amount each month, such as your phone bill and streaming services.

Set Up Controls & Alerts
Controls and alerts can make a world of difference for someone with ADHD. Configure your settings to be notified about urgent issues, such as potential fraud, and day-to-day activities, such as cleared checks, direct deposits, and low balances. Alerts can be customized to your needs, including how you receive them—via text, email, or push notification.

Set Reminders
With multiple bills each month, it can be helpful to have reminders for each due date. Set a reminder on your phone or use a paper calendar for a visual cue. Whether you schedule a weekly “bill pay day” or set alerts for each due date, reminders help prevent missed payments.

Link Your Accounts Online
If you have different accounts with multiple financial institutions, you may be able to link them all within one banking platform or a third-party budgeting app. For example, you can use BCU’s Digital Banking to link multiple bank accounts, check balances, and make and view transactions under a single login. Having this information in one place makes it easier to transfer money, keep an eye on overall spending, and see how much you’re saving.

Set It And Forget It
Utilizing the higher interest and guaranteed returns of high-yield savings accounts, money markets, or certificates of deposit (CDs) can help your savings grow more quickly than they would in a standard savings account. Once invested, the money is out of sight and out of mind, growing until you’re ready or able to withdraw it.

Sign Up For eStatements
Since organization can be a challenge for people with ADHD, consider signing up for eStatements to reduce the paper clutter in your home. You can view monthly statements online to reduce the overwhelming stack of papers that always seems to pile up.

Use Digital Wallet
Adding your credit and debit cards to your phone’s digital wallet makes payments easy and secure, whether you’re on the go or at home. You’re always covered if you forget your wallet, and being able to instantly transfer money to friends and family means you can make sure your half is covered.

ADHD can add some extra challenges when sticking to your budget, but with helpful digital tools and easy techniques, you can cut down on the stress of managing your money and reach your savings goals more easily.
