BCU Closely Monitoring Target's Card Data Breach

January 10, 2014

In a recent retail data security breach, Target® confirmed that their payment system database was compromised resulting in unauthorized access to payment card data that may have impacted certain customers making credit and debit card purchases in its U.S. stores. Approximately 40 million credit and debit card accounts may have been impacted between November 27 and December 15, 2013.

BCU began communicating with our members within hours of being notified of the breach and has continued to stay in direct communication with those members identified as being potentially impacted.

The security of our members is of utmost importance to us and we will continue to closely monitor your accounts to ensure that they are completely safe. At this time, it is safe to continue to use your card(s) and account(s) as you normally do. However, if you wish to voluntarily have your card reissued, a Member Relations representative will be happy to assist you with that request at no cost to you. All member accounts are covered by Visa's® Zero Liability policy and in the event that your card is used fraudulently, you will be reimbursed for any unauthorized charges.

While BCU has systems in place to detect potential fraud, we also encourage you to carefully review your transaction activity and to immediately notify us if you see anything suspicious or unusual. An easy way to stay on top of your account activity is by using Account Alerts. You can request to have alerts sent to you by email or text for transactions, withdrawals, and more. To sign up, login to Online Banking and click on “Account Alerts/Text Banking”.

BCU will continue to closely monitor this situation and provide updates to our members on our website and through direct communications.
